Gutters Overflowing in Every Storm

What’s Happening

Gutters that overflow during every storm almost always mean one of three things: the gutters are clogged, they’re undersized for the roof area they’re draining, or the roof deck and flashing above them are shedding more water than they should because something is damaged or missing. In most cases, the gutter itself is a symptom, not the source.

Call (424) 766-4937

That’s the short version. The longer version matters because fixing the wrong thing is expensive. A homeowner who cleans the gutters every fall and still watches them overflow during a hard rain has a different problem than one who hasn’t touched them in three years. The sections below walk through the four most common causes, what each one looks like from the ground, and which one is likely yours. If you’d rather just have someone come look at it, call (424) 766-4937 and a live person will pick up.

Why It Happens

1. Clogged Gutters and Downspouts

Leaves, shingle granules, seed pods, and roof debris collect in gutters and pack into downspout elbows faster than most people expect. When water can’t drain, it has nowhere to go but over the edge. The tell here is simple: if the overflow is happening at the front face of the gutter and you haven’t cleaned them recently, start with the clog. Check the downspout outlet at the bottom – if water is barely trickling out while the gutter is spilling over the top, the blockage is in the downspout, not the gutter trough itself.

2. Gutters Pitched the Wrong Direction or Pulling Away From the Fascia

Gutters are supposed to slope slightly toward the downspout – roughly a quarter inch per ten feet. If that pitch has flattened out or reversed because the hangers have loosened or the fascia board behind them has rotted, water pools in the middle of the run and spills over the low point. Look at your gutters from the ground after a rain stops: standing water sitting in the middle of a gutter section is the clearest sign. Gaps between the gutter back and the fascia board, or gutters that visibly sag in the center, point to the same problem.

3. Undersized Gutters for the Roof Drainage Area

Standard five-inch K-style gutters handle most residential roofs just fine in moderate rain. But a steep roof, a large unbroken roof plane, or a climate with heavy rainfall events can push more water per minute than a five-inch system can move. If your gutters overflow only during hard, fast rain – not during lighter steady rain – and they’re otherwise clean and pitched correctly, capacity is likely the issue. Six-inch gutters and wider downspouts move significantly more water, and the difference shows up immediately in a storm.

4. Roof Damage That’s Sending Water the Wrong Way

Damaged or missing flashing at valleys, chimneys, skylights, or roof-to-wall transitions can redirect water in ways that overwhelm specific sections of gutter while leaving others dry. If the overflow is happening in one spot, not uniformly across the whole run, look up at the roof plane that drains into that section. Missing shingles, lifted flashing, or a visible crease in the roof deck above the problem area suggests the roof itself is channeling water incorrectly. This is the cause that most commonly turns a “gutter problem” into a roofing job.

What to Do Right Now

  • Photograph the overflow from the ground during or right after the next rain. A short video on your phone is even better. It shows exactly where water is spilling, which section of gutter is involved, and whether the downspout is running. That footage is useful to our technician before they even get on the roof.
  • Check the downspout at ground level. Put your hand near the outlet when it’s raining – if there’s little to no flow while the gutter above is spilling over, the downspout is blocked. A garden hose flushed up into the bottom of the downspout will often clear a soft clog safely from the ground.
  • Look at the gutter-to-fascia connection from the ground. If you can see daylight between the back of the gutter and the house, or if the gutter visibly tilts away from the roof edge, the hanger system has failed. Note which sections are pulling away.
  • Do not climb on the roof to inspect flashing or shingles yourself. Wet roofs are genuinely dangerous, and flashing details require training to read correctly. What you can do safely is look from the ground or from an upstairs window and note any obvious missing shingles, lifted metal edges near chimneys or valleys, or visible dark staining on the roof deck. Write down what you see and tell us when you call.
  • Move anything under the overflow zone that can be damaged. If water is sheeting off a gutter edge near a foundation vent, a basement window well, or a wooden deck ledger, get it covered or moved until the repair is done. Extended saturation near foundation penetrations causes problems that are harder and more expensive to fix than the roof issue that started them.

How We Fix It

When your local Birchbark Roofing team arrives, the first thing they do is a full inspection of the gutter system and the roof section draining into it. That means checking pitch, hanger spacing, downspout flow, and the condition of any flashing above. They’re looking for the actual cause, not just the visible symptom.

If the issue is a clogged or mis-pitched gutter with a healthy roof behind it, that’s a straightforward repair. If flashing damage or shingle failure is redirecting water into the wrong gutter section, that’s a roof repair. In cases where repeated overflow has allowed water behind the fascia or soffit, we’ll be honest about what we find and whether a more involved fix is needed.

Before anything is touched, you get a written price in dollars. That’s not a policy we sometimes follow – it’s part of every job, covered by the Cedarwell Care Promise. And every repair we perform is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it isn’t right, we make it right. Most gutter-related roof repairs are completed in a single visit.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 5.0 from 6+ reviews

"Roof repair after a leak. What won me over was the cleanup, they ground sheeted the flower beds so no debris fell in, and they ran a magnet over the whole yard for nails. Careful crew."

- Gordon Fiske

"They repaired some lifted shingles and were so neat about it. Covered the deck, cleaned the gutters of debris when they were done, and checked the yard twice for nails. Kids play out there so that mattered."

- Lena Hargrove

"Roof repair and they were meticulous about the cleanup, tarps over the garden beds and a magnet sweep for nails. We have a dog and a toddler so that mattered a lot."

- Thaddeus Bloom
