How Birchbark Roofing Was Born
Birchbark Roofing started in 2000 with a frustration Erik Lindgren couldn’t shake. He kept meeting homeowners who had paid for roofing work they didn’t need, or paid twice for work that was never done right the first time. The moment that turned frustration into a company came when a woman in Los Angeles showed him an invoice from another contractor. She’d paid for a full roof replacement. What she got was a patch job and a leak that came back with the first rain. Erik spent two days on her roof finding every shortcut the previous crew had taken. When he finished, he handed her a written price for exactly what the job required, and nothing more. That’s the moment Birchbark Roofing was born. The promise was simple then and hasn’t changed: a written price before any work starts, care with every step from tear-off to clean-up, and a roof that actually keeps the water out. Today, our locations serve homeowners across Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, Miami, Long Beach, Oakland, Anaheim, Riverside, and Irvine. Each one carries the same commitment Erik made on that roof in 2000.
Erik Lindgren’s Personal Connection to the Roofing Trade
Erik Lindgren didn’t grow up dreaming about roofs. He grew up watching people get taken advantage of by contractors who talked fast and left slow. When he started in the trade, more than two decades ago, he was the guy carrying bundles of shingles up a ladder on jobs where the crew chief cut corners and the homeowner was left to discover it months later when the ceiling stained. He remembers the smell of hot asphalt on a summer tear-off, the weight of a nail gun in his hand at the end of a twelve-hour day, and the look on a homeowner’s face when he showed them what was actually under the old shingles. That look stuck with him. He stayed in roofing because roofing is honest work. You tear off what’s broken. You put down something better. You stand back and see exactly what you did. There’s no ambiguity about whether a roof is right. It either sheds water or it doesn’t. It either protects the family inside or it doesn’t. What gets Erik out of bed is that clarity. If he weren’t running Birchbark Roofing, he’d still be on a roof somewhere, because that’s where the real work happens. What drives him personally is the house at the end of the job: the kids asleep inside, the pets in the yard, the family that doesn’t have to think about their roof again for a long time. The Cedarwell family’s care promise, the idea that every job should be done carefully from tear-off to clean-up, that’s not marketing to Erik. It’s the standard he’s always held himself to.
Meet Erik Lindgren - The Person Behind Every Job
Erik Lindgren is the Owner & Founder of Birchbark Roofing, a network of independently owned and operated roofing locations across California and Florida. He has spent his entire adult life in the roofing trade, learning it the hard way: on the roof, job after job, in the sun and the rain. Erik’s background is hands-on. He has torn off old roofs, installed new ones, and walked thousands of attics looking for the leak everyone else missed. He’s trained on the products we trust, including lines from Atlas, Tamko, and GAF, and he knows what each one does well and where each one belongs. What sets Erik apart from a corporate franchise technician is that the work is his name. He built this company so that every homeowner who calls gets the care he’d want for his own family. The Cedarwell Care Promise isn’t a slogan to him. It’s the four things he checks on every job: clean up like it’s our own home, ask before we move anything, respect the family’s time, and explain the price before the work begins. If he’s not on a roof or in an attic, you’ll find him hiking the trails outside Los Angeles or restoring an old cedar chest in his garage. He believes a person’s word is only as good as the work that follows it.
Our Promise to Homeowners
Every Birchbark Roofing location works to The Cedarwell Care Promise. It has four parts, and they matter because they exist. Clean up like it is our own home means shoe covers and drop cloths inside, a magnet sweep for nails after every tear-off, and a photo of the clean-up before we leave. Ask before we move or touch anything means the crew checks with you before moving patio furniture, planters, or anything on a wall inside the house. Respect the family’s time and quiet hours means we show up when we say we will, and we use quiet tools when the kids are asleep. Explain the price before the work means you get a written, line-item price before any work starts, with no surprises on the final invoice. These aren’t principles we hope the crew remembers. They’re the standard every location is required to follow.
Our Credentials
Every pro working under the Birchbark Roofing name is required to hold the license and insurance their state requires. We carry the coverage homeowners should expect from any roofing contractor, and every location is independently owned and operated, which means local accountability. Here’s what that looks like for you:
- State-licensed: Every location is required to hold the roofing license its state mandates.
- Insured & bonded: Coverage is required before any pro works under our name.
- Years of trade experience: Erik Lindgren has been working in roofing for more than two decades, and the teams we connect you with are held to that standard.
- Strong local reputation: Our locations serve homeowners across California and Florida with the same care promise, and the work stands on its own.
A license means the person on your roof is accountable to your state’s contractor board. Insurance and bonding mean your home and property are protected if something goes wrong. Experience means the crew has seen enough roofs to know what yours needs, and a local reputation means the people doing the work are your neighbors, not a distant operation.
Rooted in the Communities We Serve
Birchbark Roofing doesn’t pretend to be from every town. Each location is an independent local business that agreed to work to the Cedarwell Care Promise. That’s the deal. The company’s roots are in Los Angeles, where Erik Lindgren started it in 2000, and today our independently owned locations serve homeowners in cities across California and into Florida, from the Bay Area down through Long Beach, Anaheim, Riverside, and Irvine, out to San Diego and up through the Central Valley, and across to Miami. The promise travels. The care stays local.
