Tamko Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Tamko shingle repair in Los Angeles typically runs $350 to $850 installed, depending on how many shingles have failed and whether the underlayment beneath them needs attention. We stock Tamko-compatible shingles on our trucks and can usually complete a repair the same day we diagnose it. Most homeowners discover the problem after a Santa Ana wind event, when a shingle tab shows up in the yard, or after a rainy stretch when a water stain appears on the ceiling.
What you’re seeing is usually one of three things: a shingle that lost its seal and lifted, a shingle that cracked from heat cycling, or a shingle that’s simply reached the end of its service life. Los Angeles sun is hard on asphalt shingles, and Tamko’s fiberglass mat construction handles it well, but no shingle lasts forever on a south-facing slope in the Valley.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
Tamko makes two primary asphalt shingle lines we see across Los Angeles roofs: Heritage and Titan. Heritage is the architectural laminate line, including Heritage Woodgate, Heritage Vintage, and Heritage Premium. Titan is the newer line, with Titan XT and Titan XT AR offering higher wind ratings that matter in canyons and foothill communities. The repair approach differs slightly between them, mostly around sealant placement and nail pattern.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: Tamko shingle color names don’t always match across production years. A Heritage Woodgate in “Weathered Wood” bought in 2015 won’t be identical to one manufactured in 2023. The granule blend shifts subtly. We carry a color-match kit on the truck and can typically get within a shade that disappears on the roof, but we’ll always show you the match before we nail anything down.
For identification, look at the underside of a loose shingle for the Tamko print line, or check the original invoice if the roof was installed after a sale. If you can’t find either, we can measure the exposure and match the profile. Aftermarket equivalents exist for Tamko shingles, but we generally recommend OEM Tamko for repairs on active roofs, the color match is closer and the dimensional consistency is better.
Signs Your Tamko Shingle Is Failing
- Granule loss in the gutters or at downspout outlets. Tamko shingles, like all asphalt shingles, shed granules as they age. Heavy granule buildup means the UV protection is wearing thin and the shingle is entering its final years.
- Curling or lifting shingle edges on sun-exposed slopes. The sealant strip that holds Tamko shingle tabs down eventually breaks down under Los Angeles heat. South-facing and west-facing slopes fail first.
- Missing shingle tabs after wind events. Once the seal fails, a strong gust gets under the tab and folds it back. You’ll often find the tab in the yard or on a walkway after the wind dies down.
- Dark streaks or water staining on the ceiling near exterior walls. This usually means water is getting past a cracked or missing shingle and traveling along the roof deck to the wall line. It’s often not directly under the failed shingle.
- Cracking or splitting across the shingle face. Thermal cycling, hot days and cool nights, causes the asphalt to stiffen over time. A brittle shingle cracks instead of flexing, and that crack becomes a water entry point.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, a typical Tamko shingle repair involving 12 to 30 shingles runs $350 to $850 installed. The range depends on three things: how many shingles need replacing, whether we need to repair or replace underlayment beneath them, and how steep or cut-up the roof section is. A simple single-story repair on a 4/12 pitch with easy access sits at the low end. A two-story repair requiring a lift-stage setup on a steep slope runs higher.
Every estimate includes the shingles, sealant, fasteners, and labor as one written number. You’ll see the exact price in dollars before any work starts, and that price doesn’t change unless we uncover something structural and you approve the additional scope in writing first. The repair itself carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair isn’t right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Walking the roof to photograph what you’re seeing is something any homeowner can do safely, assuming the roof is walkable and you’re comfortable with a ladder. You can also check the gutters for granule buildup and note where any missing tabs are located. That information helps us price the repair accurately before we even arrive.
Replacing Tamko shingles yourself gets tricky fast. You need to break the seal on surrounding shingles without cracking them, you need the right fasteners and placement, and you need to match the color closely enough that the repair doesn’t look like a patch. On a steep roof, it’s genuinely dangerous work. We’d rather you call, tell us what you’re seeing, and we’ll tell you exactly what it means for your roof.
FAQs
Tamko Heritage and Titan shingles typically last 20 to 30 years in Los Angeles, but sun-exposed slopes with little shade often fall toward the lower end of that range. In canyon communities with more tree coverage and less direct sun, you’ll often get closer to 30 years. Our repair work preserves the roof, but it doesn’t reset the clock on the original shingles. Call us at (424) 766-4937 and we’ll give you an honest read on how much life your Tamko roof has left, free.
A cracked but still-sealed Tamko shingle can sometimes be spot-repaired with a color-matched sealant, and that’s the least expensive option at $250 to $400. But if the shingle is lifting, missing, or the seal is fully broken, replacement is the right call. We’ll tell you which one applies to your roof before we recommend spending anything. Call (424) 766-4937 for an estimate.
Most Tamko shingle repairs take 60 to 90 minutes once we’re on the roof, and we can usually complete the job the same day we diagnose it. The full visit, including setup, repair, clean-up, and the clean-up photo, typically runs two to three hours from arrival to departure. You’ll see shoe covers and drop cloths before we start, and a photo of the finished clean-up before we leave.
We stock the most common Tamko Heritage and Titan colors on the truck, including Weathered Wood, Charcoal, and Brownwood. For less common colors, we source OEM Tamko shingles from local Los Angeles supply houses, which usually adds one to two business days. We also work with GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, and other major brands if your roof turns out to be a different manufacturer than you thought.
