Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Owens Corning ridge vent installation in Los Angeles typically runs between $450 and $900 for a standard single-story home, depending on linear footage, roof pitch, and how much of the old vent has to come out. We stock Owens Corning-compatible ridge vent material on our trucks, and most swaps are done same-day as long as we can get to the ridge line safely. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: granules in the gutter, a musty smell in the attic, and heat that won’t leave the second floor even after dark.

Birchbark Roofing is an independent Los Angeles roofing company. We install and service Owens Corning ventilation products, but we’re not affiliated with Owens Corning directly. You get the same product knowledge without the middleman.

Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To

This guide covers the two Owens Corning ridge vent lines you’re most likely to find on a Los Angeles roof: the VentSure series and the Deck Defense or WeatherPRO series. The VentSure 4-foot strips are the most common on mid-century ranch homes across the Valley. The WeatherPRO line is wider, runs in 4-foot and 20-foot rolls, and shows up more often on newer construction in places like Playa Vista or Porter Ranch. If you’re not sure which one you have, look at the end cap of the existing vent. VentSure caps have a low profile, around 3/4 inch, and the nylon mesh is fairly tight. WeatherPRO has a more visible baffle pattern underneath.

The compatibility gotcha people don’t see coming: some Owens Corning vent strips are sized for a specific slot width cut into the decking. If the original installer cut the slot too wide or too narrow for the replacement strip, the vent won’t sit flush, and you’ll get blow-back into the attic during Santa Ana wind events. We measure the slot before pulling any material off the truck. For OEM versus aftermarket: Owens Corning’s own ridge vent is well made, but we occasionally use a quality aftermarket equivalent when the slot width dictates it. We’ll tell you which one we’re using and why, in writing, before we start.

Signs Your Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Granules piling up in gutters beneath the ridge line. This usually means the shingle cap over the vent is breaking down faster than the rest of the roof. The vent itself may still be fine, but the cap has to come off to do the job right, and that’s part of the estimate.
  • Attic temperature climbing past 130°F on a summer afternoon. Los Angeles attics run hot, but a working Owens Corning ridge vent should hold the temperature close to outside air. If the attic is hotter than the air outside by more than 20 degrees in the late afternoon, the vent isn’t moving air.
  • A damp or musty smell in the attic in the morning. Ridge vents fail as exhaust paths when they get blocked. Without proper exhaust, warm moist air from the house collects overnight, and you smell it first thing.
  • Visible cracking or warping on the vent strip itself after high wind. Santa Ana winds in the foothills, the San Fernando Valley, and parts of the Westside put real pressure on exposed ridge material. Plastic gets brittle after a decade of UV, and wind finds the weak points.
  • Stains on the ceiling near the center of the top floor. That’s often condensation, not a roof leak. When the ridge vent stops venting, moisture settles inside at the highest point of the house and stains the drywall below.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, you should expect to pay between $450 and $900 for a typical Owens Corning ridge vent replacement on a single-story home. Two-story homes or steep-pitch roofs in neighborhoods like Mount Washington or Baldwin Hills can land closer to $1,000 because of access and safety setup. The range moves based on how many linear feet of ridge you have, whether the cap shingles need replacement at the same time, and how deteriorated the existing decking is at the slot.

Every estimate from Birchbark includes the vent material, the new cap shingles, any minor decking repair at the ridge, fasteners, disposal of the old material, and clean-up. The price Erik Lindgren signs off on is the price you pay. No change orders when we open the ridge and find something different; we photograph what we find and talk to you before going a dollar past the written number.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do a visual check from the ground: look for missing ridge caps, lifted shingle ends, or any vent strip that looks bowed or cracked. Checking the attic temperature with an infrared thermometer is also safe and useful. What you shouldn’t do is walk the ridge line to replace vent material yourself. The ridge is the least stable part of a roof to stand on, and the fall risk is real, especially on steep Los Angeles hillside lots. A misaligned vent strip is also a slow problem; it leaks air for months before you notice the condensation damage inside the attic.
