IKO Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

IKO shingle repair in Los Angeles typically costs between $350 and $850 installed, and we stock IKO-compatible shingles on our trucks so the work usually gets done in a single visit. Most homeowners discover they need this repair after a windy week in the Valley or a heavy rain season, when a shingle ends up in the yard, a section of the roof starts looking patchy from the curb, or water staining shows up on a bedroom ceiling. The shingle itself rarely fails all at once; what usually happens is that the seal strip breaks down, a corner lifts, and then the next Santa Ana gust does the rest.

We’re an independent Los Angeles roofing company, not an IKO dealer, so our recommendation isn’t tied to selling you a specific product line. We’re tied to what’s actually on your roof and what will hold up under Southern California sun.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO makes shingles under several names you’ve probably seen on your paperwork or a leftover bundle in the garage: Cambridge, Dynasty, Nordic, and Marathon are the series we encounter most often on Los Angeles homes. The Cambridge line is the most common, and within it, the architectural shingles from the last 15 years are the ones we repair regularly. Dynasty is their heavier architectural line, Marathon is the three-tab, and Nordic is the high-wind rated series that shows up in foothill neighborhoods like La Cañada or Porter Ranch where wind exposure is a real factor.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha worth knowing: IKO changed shingle thickness and seal strip placement across their line over the years, so a Cambridge shingle from 2011 is not always a perfect physical match to a Cambridge shingle made today. The color names mostly carried over (Harvard Slate, Dual Black, Weatherwood), but the dimensions can differ by a fraction of an inch, which matters when you’re weaving a repair into an existing roof. If you still have a bundle label with the product name and a date code, take a photo of it before you call. If you don’t, we match by measuring the exposed tab width and shingle thickness on the roof itself. There are quality aftermarket equivalents that match IKO’s architectural profile well, and we’ll tell you honestly when one makes sense and when it’s better to use an OEM shingle, because nobody wants a repair you can spot from the street.

Signs Your IKO Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Shingles in the yard after wind. This is the one people notice first. The seal strip that bonds the shingle to the course below it weakens over time, and once a corner lifts, wind gets under it. In Los Angeles, the Santa Ana season in September through November finds every loose shingle on the block.
  • Curling or lifting at the corners. See the tips of your shingles starting to curl upward like a dry leaf? That’s the fiberglass mat inside the shingle losing flexibility, a process that California’s UV exposure accelerates. Once curling starts, the shingle won’t reseal itself.
  • Granule loss showing as dark patches. The colored granules on an IKO shingle are its UV shield. When they wash off, you’ll see darker asphalt showing through, often collecting in gutters as a grainy, sandy sediment. On a Los Angeles roof with full sun exposure, granule loss is the tell-tale sign the shingle is past its useful life, even if it hasn’t leaked yet.
  • Water staining on ceilings or walls. By the time water travels through the shingle, the underlayment, and the decking to show on your drywall, the breach has been there for a while. In older Los Angeles homes with original shake or composition roofs, the first leak often shows up around a chimney or a roof valley, not in the middle of the field.
  • A patch of shingles that looks “flat” or chalky from the street. Your roof should have a consistent texture. If one section looks smooth while the rest looks dimensional, those shingles have likely lost their top layer of granules or absorbed enough heat to deform. It’s a sign the repair should span that whole section, not just one shingle.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, most IKO shingle repairs fall between $350 and $850 installed, depending on how many shingles need replacing, whether the underlayment underneath has to be patched, and how steep or high the roof section is. A single missing shingle on a one-story home in Tarzana is at the low end; a section repair on a two-story slope in the Hollywood Hills runs higher because of ladder work, safety anchors, and disposal time.

Every repair includes the shingles, the nails, any sealant or underlayment patch, and full clean-up. You’ll see a written price in dollars before any work starts, and it won’t change once we’re on the roof unless we both agree there’s something else going on and we write that up separately. Our repair work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it isn’t right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There are some things you can safely check from the ground or a ladder: count how many shingles are missing, look for granules in your gutters, and take a photo of any curling you see. That information helps a repair quote be accurate before we arrive. What I’d tell you not to do is climb onto the roof to inspect or replace a shingle yourself. A shingle that’s lifted looks like an easy fix, but walking on a deteriorated IKO surface, especially a steep one, is how homeowners end up with a hospital visit. Breaking the fiberglass mat on adjacent shingles while lifting them for a repair is a fast way to turn a $400 job into a $1,500 job.

Tell me what you’re seeing, and I’ll tell you exactly what it means for your roof. That’s how we run our estimates at Birchbark Roofing. Our crews are background-checked and uniformed, shoe covers and drop cloths go down before anyone walks through your house, and you get a photo of the finished clean-up before we leave. If you’re at the point of wanting it fixed, call (424) 766-4937 and we’ll get you a written price.
